The Travels

The hubcap covers the rim, decorative;
although, the rubber can still be seen/
felt, friction on the pavement/
tar macadam, the smell of brimstone,
the whining changes in pitch,
the sonorous hum of modernity
across bridges, through tunnels
The lugs mark the milestones
of the year; the accumulative breaking
dust/rust, the wear of slowing inertia,
each revolution, the time in the journey.
The tread wears–picks up/casts off
debris from the road: some wedges
into the jaggedness, evidence of geological
travels/travails. The thinning of the
shell/shield from buffeting/bombardment—
Blowout! entry into the junkyard
waiting for the eventual burial of all tires.
