Dinosaur

T

he dinosaur falls out of the sun
into the shadow of plumage;
the scant down fluffs full for preening,
bones lighter than balsa:
reptilian lumber honed to wisps
of structure, labored respiration
circumvented and recycled.
Soaring iridescent on currents
buffeting the crosshatched keratin
quills, the raptor scans cumbersome
herds shuffling across cracked mud
scales rattling in thunder.
Patterns of particulates march —
endless sky fills a four-chambered heart
with joy as feathers molt away,
with the dive into heavy morning.
